An employee of the “Dendrology Garden” conducted dendrochronological research and monitoring of old tree species in East Zangezur

Shalala Mammadova, a leading specialist of the “Dendrochronology” laboratory of the “Dendrology Garden” public legal entity (PLE) under the authority of the head of the  Executive Power of Baku City, conducted scientific research work on dendrochronological research and monitoring of old tree species in the East Zangezur economic region on 13-20 August, 2026. 
The basic aim of the scientific research work is to identify old and valuable tree specimens distributed in the East Zangezur economic region, study their age indicators, annual radial growth dynamics, as well as investigate the ecological and climatic factors affecting the development of trees.
For this purpose, scientific expeditions were organized to various areas of Lachin and Kalbajar regions, identify old tree specimens in the area and take samples for dendrochronological research.
During the expedition, mainly oak (Quercus spp.), beech (Fagus L.), maple (Acer L.) and willow (Salix spp.) were obtained. 
The samples taken will be prepared using special methods in laboratory conditions and analyzed for the number of annual rings, width and radial growth indicators. Based on the obtained dendrochronological data, the approximate age of the trees will be determined, their development dynamics in various years will be investigated and their relationship with climatic factors will be assessed.
As a consequence of the monitoring conducted, it is intended to identify old tree specimens of particular importance in terms of their preservation and transmission to future generations in the East Zangezur economic region, and to form a scientific database on the assessment and protection of their biological condition.
The results of the study are expected to contribute to the scientific study of the dendroflora of the region, monitoring of old trees and protection of biodiversity.
